Skins Representation

Representation Of Tony

When we first see Tony, he comes across as a rather strange teenager, not what you'd expect from a normal teenager, he has a lot of contrast to how other teenagers are, his room is all nice and clean and well organized. Not what you would expect from a stereotypical teenager.

Tony first appears lying on his bed, and on his cover was a picture of a nude male and female, he was lying in the middle, which makes us question his sexuality. The lightning technique on his face is shown so that one side of his face is darker than the other, this is used commonly in scenes to add further depth to his character, the lighting may suggest that there's two sides to Tony that we have still to meet.

Straight away when Tony gets out of bed, we can see his desire for sex, We see him looking out his window to catch a lady who's old enough to be his mum, fully nude, picking out clothes to wear for her day, she intentionally does this in the window to allow Tony to see. Which may suggest they have some sort of sexual relationship.

When we are introduced to Tony's dad, we can quickly pick up who's the boss of the house, first when Tony turns on his broken speaker, it goes to full volume, which allows for his sister to sneak into the house after coming back late from partying, this shows that Tony is very mischievous and can gain respect by helping one out in a very witty style, once the dad enters the room, we can see the relationship that they have with each other. Dad immediately bursts into the room swearing and cursing towards Tony, yelling "Pull the plug out you TW*T!" which shows that the love between the two has been long gone, instead the dad treats Tony like an adult, telling him to do things in a somewhat hilarious fashion. After this we soon pick up the kind of teenager Tony is, the dad says "It's every morning!" which clearly shows that he's done this more than once, or in other words, shows that Tony s sister is out partying all the time. The scene ends with dad leaving the room, and Tony gladly turning the speaker off afterwards.

There is also an interesting use of diegetic and none diegetic sound in the episode, it begins with some diegetic sound of the church bells when he first wakes up, and throughout the start we can hear his dad swearing about how mad he is with Tony. The reason he's swearing at Tony is because of how witty and clever he is, Tony is constantly reminding him of who's in charge, like in the bathroom scenario, where Tony makes his dad very angry by locking himself in the toilet, and then going out the window and sliding back down into the kitchen, resulting in the Dad being very mad at Tony who's in fact downstairs, this makes the Dad look very stupid in front of everyone, and lets him know that he shouldn't mess with Tony.

First scene conclusion
In the first scene alone, we start to learn about who Tony is and what kind of teenager he is, he comes across as a stereotypical teenager, who has a desire for sex and does not do what their told, instead he gets his own way with his smart wit and wise tactics.

Tony and his friends, Tony seems to have a variety of friends, some of them being nerdy virgins, and others are hot girls with a high status that he's probably had sex with. Tony has alot of respect from anyone and everyone. He does alot of favours for his friends that cause him no hassle at all, and we can soon see how much respect Tony has, he rings up all his friends and says there's going to be a party, of which he will get his nerdy friend laid, and so everyone will go to it, because Tony said so. However if this was someone with allot less respect, no one would attend, because who want's to go to a nerdy guys party? Right? We can see how broad and open Tony is to all his friends, he gives most of them respect and he gets it back.
